Harp Exhibition

Hoi Kwon Choi, harp maker

Upon seeing a harp performance in Toronto, furniture designer Hoi Kwon Choi was intrigued to start building harps by himself! With his extensive experience in woodworking and great love for music, and after an adventurous meeting with harpist Andrew T.O. Chan in summer 2006, their journey of collaboration began. He has now built six lever harps and three harp sculptures, and exhibited them at local galleries and recitals. They have also been featured by the Toronto Korean Television and newspaper.

Professionally, Mr. Choi has been highly awarded both in Canada and Korea. His achievements include the Best Canadian Designer Summit Award, Trillium Awards, Canadian Home Furnishings Award, and the Prime Minister’s Award of Korea. Most recently, he has been awarded Korean Artist of the Year 2009 by Korea Times (Toronto). Other than building harps, he has also built several violins, a cello, a marimba, an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, designed two pianos and most of his furniture at home. Furthermore, he is the designer of the sofa at Andrew's Harp Studio!

Recently, Mr Choi finished revising the Eagle Harp and is working on two new harps. He plans to exhibit the new works at local galleries and at the recitals of the Andrew Chan Harp Studio. The artist continues his joy of building harps for his beloved wife, and always welcomes feedback. Email them to: hoi_choi@hotmail.com
